Why Bookworms Love The Holidays
So why do bookworms love the holidays?
Basically, book lovers are known for their general liking of
the holidays. I mean, who doesn’t like the holidays? Decorations and fun and
snow and all that. And we always love reading books, don’t we? But there’s something
about reading in the holidays, something I can’t quite put my finger on, but I’m
going to try listing a few reasons.
1)
A clear
conscience: We all read. Holidays or not, the reading occurs,
BUT in the holidays, we have more of a clear conscience. Lying in a ball of
laziness and reading is 100x different from reading, knowing you have a huge
assignment for the day after. That annoying, nagging voice in the back of your
head takes a vacation too, and for once, you can read with a clear conscience.
2)
Book
gifts: You want to say it. I know you do. You’re just afraid of
coming off as materialistic, but deep inside, your bookworm heart loves the
holidays because of all the books (or book merch) you’re getting! Don’t lie.
3)
Kiss the
reading slumps goodbye: Spare time, new books, perfect weather; how
could you not read? Have you ever had so much academic or work pressure that
you just could not read? And books you love won’t even solve it? And you’re
just stuck, barely reading a book or two a month, and it just feels so
different? A reading slump. The holidays are a perfect way to get back on track
and complete any reading challenges you’ve fallen behind on. You have free time
and new books. Several hours straight reading a really good book? Yes, please.
4)
Genre
diversity: Do you ever just feel like a certain weather contributes to a
certain genre, and it just feels so much better to read a certain type of
books? The winter shouldn’t worry you! Dark clouds, rain tapping against your
window… it would feel so good to twist the mood with a happy contemporary or
match it with a sad love story or just make use of all the free time you won’t
have in a few weeks and read a mammoth 800-paged fantasy. Perhaps nonfiction. Whatever
you choose, the weather is appropriate. Winter is never NOT appropriate. It matches
all the genres.
5)
Buying people
books: So you’ve been bugging your friends about reading your new favorite
book, but they just won’t budge. The holidays are the perfect excuse to get
them the book. This way, they’ll have to read it! I think.
6)
More time
for book-blogging: To me, this is really important. One thing I love
about the holidays is having the time to post, and then using reading to
procrastinate posting. Crap, maybe I should rethink the whole clear conscience
thing…
Anyway, I hope you guys liked this! If there’s
anything I missed, feel free to tell me below!
